MarketPlace: 1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe 3.6L Backdate
Ended on PCARMARKET · 1978 Porsche 911 911 SC · 160,595 miles · Santa Ana, CA
Completed in May 2026 following a comprehensive four-year refurbishment and modification project, this 1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe has been transformed into a driver-focused backdate powered by a 964-sourced 3.6-liter M64 flat-six engine. Finished in satin Casablanca Beige Metallic, the build features a full steel Turbo-style widebody conversion, backdated front and rear bodywork, and an extensively reworked black leather and Alcantara interior with a painted carbon fiber tub. Additional highlights include Sparco SPX carbon-fiber bucket seats, a MOMO carbon-fiber steering wheel, a backdated metal dashboard, staggered 17” Fuchs-style wheels, 930 hubs and brakes, upgraded suspension components, Billy Boat headers, a GT3-style muffler, a Patrick Motorsports flywheel, a fender-mounted oil cooler, and a rebuilt 915 manual transaxle with an OS Giken limited-slip differential. This extensively modified 911SC backdate is now being offered for auction in California accompanied by comprehensive build invoices. The exterior was stripped to bare metal during the project and modified with backdated front and rear bodywork along with steel 930-style widebody fenders. It was subsequently refinished in Casablanca Beige Metallic with a satin finish, providing a contemporary interpretation of a period Porsche color. Exterior details include chrome window moldings and door handles, a bullet-style driver-side mirror, projector headlamps with chrome rings, pop-out rear quarter windows, dual center-mounted exhaust outlets, red brake calipers, and an electric sunroof. Staggered Fuchs-style wheels measure 17x9” at the front and 17x11” at the rear and are mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Detailed images documenting the exterior finish and condition are provided in the gallery. The cabin was extensively reworked as part of the build and features a painted carbon-fiber tub incorporating molded rear seat bottoms. Black leather and Alcantara upholstery is applied throughout, including the backdated metal dashboard, RS-style door panels, and Sparco SPX carbon-fiber bucket seats. Dynamat sound-deadening material was installed throughout the cabin to reduce noise and vibration. Additional appointments include a MOMO carbon-fiber steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, and a Rennline ExactShift billet short shifter. The electrical system was also completely renewed with new 12-volt wiring and a solid-state MSD relay block. Power comes from a 3.6-liter M64 flat-six sourced from a 1990 Porsche 964 and paired with a rebuilt Type 915 manual transaxle featuring an OS Giken limited-slip differential. Performance upgrades include a 911Chips engine-management tune, Billy Boat 1-3/4” headers with a GT3-style muffler, a Patrick Motorsports 60-2 conversion flywheel, a Sachs aluminum Power Clutch and pressure plate, and a fender-mounted oil cooler, while the 964 power-steering system was deleted as part of the conversion. The engine was comprehensively resealed within the last 12k miles, including replacement of valve cover and intake manifold gaskets, front and rear main seals, a crankshaft speed sensor, and service to the commonly referenced “triangle of death” area. Additional maintenance included a valve adjustment, a rebuilt distributor with a new internal belt, new rotors, distributor caps, and spark plugs, as well as a refreshed airflow meter. Further work included revised throttle and fuel-feed components, a new fuel tank and fuel lines, a rebuilt pedal box, and all-new 12-volt wiring with a solid-state MSD relay block. Chassis upgrades include 930 hubs and brakes, reinforced shock towers configured for coilover suspension, and an Eibach rear sway bar. The seller notes minor oil drips are left after the car is parked. This sale will include build records, exterior touch-up paint, two key sets, a spare tire, a new-in-box Wilwood parking brake kit, and a clean title. The seller would like you to know: “The car turns heads everywhere it goes. I've owned 6 classic 911's over the past 25 years and the driving experience of this is superior to any 3.0, 3.2 or even 964 car. The symphony of sound coming from the GT3 exhaust is incredible and sounds like a GT car screaming through the canyons.”
