1965 Ford T5 Coupe 289

This 1965 Ford is a German market T5 coupe that is said to have never left the United States after being first delivered to Fort Lee Motors in New Jersey. The seller states it was ordered new by a United States service member stationed in Germany, but after the original order was canceled the car ended up being sold to a Ford employee who worked in the export division at the Metutchen, New Jersey assembly plant. After changing hands multiple times and taking on the sobriquet, “Betsy,” the car made its way to the seller in 2003. A previous owner undertook mechanical repairs that included overhauling the C-code 289ci V8 and the rear differential. Under current ownership in 2005, further refurbishment took place including repairing the body, repainting the exterior in Vintage Burgundy, replacing the rear shocks, reupholstering the interior in black vinyl, and refreshing the chrome trim. Recent work is noted to have included rebuilding the transmission in 2022 and replacing the carpets approximately one year ago. This T-5 is offered with a four-page narrative documenting the car’s history as well as transferable New York registration in the seller’s name. Because the Mustang name was a trademark owned by Krupp in Germany, Ford opted to rebadge the Mustang the “T5” in Europe. Several modifications were incorporated to change the car, including blacked-out hubcap centers, Shelby-style shock tower bracing, a reinforced cowl, internal frame reinforcements, suspension revisions, and lighting changes. The Mustang script on both the horn ring and gas cap were removed, as well. This T-5 has a DSO of 95, indicating it is an export car. During the 2006 refurbishment, the floor pans, front fenders, hood, passenger door, quarter panels, trunk floor, and windshield were replaced, reproduction brightwork and T-5 badging was fitted, and the car was repainted Vintage Burgundy. The seller notes the cowl was repaired with fiberglass and plastic “top hats” under previous ownership. The 14″ steel wheels were mounted with 205/75 BFGoodrich Silvertown red-line tires circa 2014. The shocks were replaced with adjustable air shocks during the refurbishment. The brake pedal is described as “soft”. The seats were reupholstered in black vinyl in 2006. A rodent-related issue was resolved approximately one year ago, at which time the carpets were replaced. The seller notes, “occasional undertones of mustiness on hot days.” The footwell lights only illuminate when the driver’s door is opened. The radio is not connected. Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer flanked by fuel-level and water-temperature gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 43k miles and may have rolled over. Total mileage is unknown. The speedometer needle occasionally jumps, which is accompanied by a ticking noise. The car does not start when the headlight switch is in the “on” position, and the instrument cluster lights and shift indicator lights do not work. The seller reports that the C-code 289ci V8 was overhauled under prior ownership. The Autolite carburetor was rebuilt and the fuel pump and fuel tank were replaced in 2013. A ticking noise from the engine is noted. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The seller states the rear differential was rebuilt prior to his purchase in 2003 and the transmission was rebuilt in 2022. Corrosion is visible on underbody components. The warranty data tag reveals that the car was built at the Metuchen assembly plant in Edison, New Jersey, and was factory equipped with a 289ci V8.
